Wanting to be a Red Indian
- Franz Kafka
Ah,
if one were a Red Indian,
on the alert immediately,
[talking about the
white men coming]
Kicking Bird: How many?
John Dunbar: Like the stars
Kicking Bird: How many?
John Dunbar: Like the stars
and if leaning into the
wind on one’s galloping horse one went quivering over the quavering ground,
over and over again till
one stopped using the spurs,
there being no spurs,
There's a highway of stars across the heavens
A hope and a dream at the edge of the sky
- Johnny Clegg
till one threw away the
reins,
there being no reins,
and one scarcely saw the
terrain out in front as a well-mown stretch of moorland without even a horse’s
neck now or a horse’s head.
Kicking Bird: I was just thinking that of all the trails in
this life, there are some that matter most. It is the trail of a true human
being. I think you are on this trail, and it is good to see.

May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.
